SAMs 1.1.1 and 1.3.2, Approved in FY20 RRE ID 82672; This collaborative research project will establish the Consortium on Nuclear Security Technologies (CONNECT) with University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Saint Mary's University, Argonne National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The consortium will conduct basic and applied research that exploits experimental, and computational technologies to address grand challenges in nuclear science and engineering pertained to nuclear security. CONNECT will focus on three main areas: 1) Fuel cycle material synthesis and fabrication, 2) advanced characterization for forensic signature identification, and 3) computational modeling and data science methods for analytics and artificial intelligence pertaining to the nuclear security enterprise. CONNECT has provided funding for 21 graduate students, 2 post-doctoral fellows, and 32 undergraduate students. CONNECT has been particularly successful at directing these students to and preparing them for careers in nuclear security science and engineering in the DOE complex.
