Note:

SAMs 1.1.4 and 1.3.1; The key innovation from this NSF research project is introducing a new methodology that enables the calculation of highly accurate sensitivity information for predicting, understanding, and controlling the instability behavior in periodic architected materials. This new approach is original and creative, as it combines multicomplex mathematics within FEM to advance the fundamental understanding of micro instabilities in PAMs and provide a pathway for tailoring these materials' instability response to achieve desired target responses. Due to the similarities between the instability behavior of architected materials and the instability of slender structures, this research will also contribute to the advancement in the fundamental understanding of the stability of materials and structures in general. The methodology will be coupled with topology optimization to guide the design of new tunable PAMs. A combined approach involving analytical work and experiments will be used to verify and validate this new methodology.
