Note:
SAMs 1.1.1; This research project will consist of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to investigating critical hypersonic aerothermodynamic phenomena using both modern computational and experimental tools. UTSA (a designated Minority-Serving Institution and Carnegie R1 research institution) plans to partner with ORNL to provide state-of-the-art experimental validation data for high-fidelity computational models. We seek to achieve the following primary objectives: 1) Produce validation-quality experimental datasets and robust computational simulations of multiple relevant hypersonic test cases, 2) Refine and demonstrate a set of novel experimental tools tailored to investigations of hypersonic flow physics, and 3) Foster the growth of a pipeline of technically proficient U.S. citizens that are prepared to contribute to the development of hypersonic platforms. Successful completion of these objective milestones will significantly enhance the U.S. capability for hypersonic system design, specifically by providing an improved capability for the study/prediction of critical flow physics and by establishing a diverse and talented hypersonic workforce pipeline.
