Note:
SAMs 1.1.1; This research project proposes the development of OR-based pheromone nanoparticle detectors that would fill a need in surveillance of crop pests. The basic platform will incorporate a pheromone-specific OR into a lipid nanodisc that will be fused to silver or gold nanoparticles (NPs). The surface plasmon resonance of the NPs will amplify fluorescent signals produced by the OR when it binds to a specific insect pheromone. We will test two types of detection mechanisms: 1) Pheromone-induced dye displacement. 2) Pheromone-induced ion transport. The fluorescence will be amplified by surface plasmon resonance from the gold NP. The results of the proposed experiments will constitute a proof of principle supporting further development of specific devices for field testing in a future research project.
