Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Fighting Fire Toxicity: Improving Safety and Health via Novel Optical Sensors
Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity:
University of California Los Angeles
CFDA: 0
Program Title: none
Note:
SAMs 1.1.1; This research and development project will leverage recent advancements in infrared optical sensing methods to achieve two objectives: (1) improve understanding of toxicant formation from the combustion and pyrolysis of select synthetic materials and fire-resistant polymers under varying fire conditions, and (2) develop miniaturized spectrometers for acute fire toxins that may be integrated into multiple response and monitoring modalities of firefighting. A synergistic two-track workplan is presented to achieve these objectives through a series of fundamental and applied research tasks that involve sensor development and controlled fire studies at university labs complemented by deployment and field testing in partnership with fire services. Successful execution of the proposed tasks is expected to yield a fast and more quantitative approach to assessing fire toxicity risk and refined protocols to fighting fires in urban settings and at the wildland-urban interface, enabled by new technology.
