Note:

SAMS 1.1.1 & 1.4.2 The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) research team aims to establish a Scared Places Heritage Resilience Network and provide them with a “resiliency roadmap” of strategies applicable to all Sacred Places in historic buildings. The proposed research study will be organized into phases, completed over a period of two years. The first phase of the proposed services will identify the case studies for vulnerability assessment. Once selected, the assessment process will directly aid the case-study participants, plus give findings the research team will need to build the “resiliency roadmap.” Within this phase we will share preliminary findings with the Sacred Places Heritage Resilience Network to establish the best principles and methods for decreased vulnerability and greater resilience in the Texas Gulf Coast region. The second phase of the research aims to identify resiliency goals through the involvement of stakeholders (community members, congregants, religious leaders, board members, operation and maintenance staff, and agencies of local government (health, emergency management, planning, public works, housing, transportation, etc.)) within the Network. Preliminary findings from the case-study assessments will be presented for discussion with the stakeholders. Findings will be captured in two discussion groups led by UTSA using the “knowledge café” format, a proven method to bring people together to brainstorm on issues, challenges, opportunities, or risks. Outcomes will be compiled together with the case-study assessment to develop the resiliency roadmap for the Sacred Places Heritage Resilience Network. The third phase aims to develop an index of Resilience Performance Indicators for Sacred Places based on combined findings of earlier phases. This index will be a measure of capacity for performance during extreme events, plus resilience in recovery. The final phase of the research aims to generate a “resiliency roadmap” for the various types of Sacred Places in the Texas Gulf Coast region.
