Program Title: none
Note:
SAMS 1.1.1 and 1.3.2; The scientific scope of this research project includes 1) identifying and linking molecular markers within Melanosome particles (MPs) from RPE cells to specific functions (i.e., structural, photochemical, etc.), 2) characterizing how these markers are affected by aging and by other stressors such as laser damage, 3) characterizing the dark and photoinduced mechanisms that lead lipofuscin products to contribute the the degradation of MPs, and 4) characterizing synthetic melanins (SMs) as models for the molecular composition of MPs. Finally a major scope of the project is to provide research training to two graduate (GR) and two undergraduate (UG) students who will perform summer research at AFRL as part of the ML-RCP summer internship program. Our investigation will lead to improve current models of photochemical and photothermal laser damage in the eye and in the skin which is major topics of interest within the AFRL Bioeffect Division (711HPW/RHD).
