Note:

SAMs 1.1.1 Research work is currently being performed and has included investigating and documenting apparent movement of numerous architectural components of the Cliff Palace alcove complex. Preliminary on-site investigation and documentation, and comparison of those findings with historic photographs are supporting a rigorous engineering investigation of the complete complex, i.e., all above ground rooms, retaining walls, below grade kivas, and supporting soils. The technical team for the NPS Vanishing Treasures program (VT) and MVNP, (the VT structural, geotechnical, and preservation engineer, archaeologists, and LiDAR technician) has started this multi-year endeavor by recently conducting a full-site and every room LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scan. This scan data will form the basis for the upcoming analyses. This collaborative research project will include robust and detailed documentation, in the form of marked drawings and photographs, and three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses of the complete Cliff Palace complex. NPS will provide guidance and oversight of the research effort to the highly qualified and experienced research faculty of the UTSA-CCS plus graduate students from the UTSA Historic Preservation, Architecture, and Civil Engineering programs.
