Note:

SAMs 1.3.2; This research project has three objectives: 1. Advance formal and informal cyber communities and connect relevant organizations. The project will incorporate hands-on curriculum material in formal and informal settings to cover IT aspects relevant to command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR). By incorporating virtual labs (vLabs) in the program of studies at USC, SCSU, and UTSA, and by organizing workshops and enabling open access to the material, the project will provide: training and research experience for Navy, Army, and Air Force ROTC communities interested in Military Occupational Specialties (MOS); training and research opportunities for veterans; training and research experience for STEM students who want to specialize in domains of interest for the Department of the Navy (DoN) and the Department of Defense (DoD); professional development events for advanced communities of practice (COP): Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC)/ESnet at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) COP, and Internet2 [7] COP; and access to self-paced training material suitable for the U.S. National Guard and general public. 2. Develop a multi-state internship program, leveraging and strengthening the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP). The 400-hour summer internship will expand the NREIP to other agencies that work on relevant topics for the DoN, including the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). In support to internships, USC will organize a pre-internship course each semester, where speakers from the above and other organizations will meet weekly with students. The course will be cross-listed and offered remotely at SCSU and UTSA. 3. Expand the Academic Cloud to support large-scale learning and research nationwide. The Academic Cloud is a proof-of-concept platform built for hands-on IT education and research. The platform was deployed by USC and the Network Development Group (NDG), the leading technology company in virtual training. The project will develop hands-on virtual lab libraries covering topics needed to advance the communities listed in Objective 1.
