Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Mental Health and Religion in South Texas: A Congregational Study of Faith Based Resources and Needs

Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity: H E Butt Family Foundation

Program Title: none

Note:

SAMs 1.1.1 This study will explore several facets of mental health outreach, programming, and literacy within faith based organizations in the South Texas region. The proposed study will apply a mixed methods approach to gain a broader understanding of the context within which religious congregations provide, discuss, and are knowledgeable about mental health issues among religious leaders, parishioners and within their local communities. Theoretically, the study will draw from previous work that has explored linkages between religion and mental health outcomes while also considering work on mental health literacy within religious organizations. The empirical component of the project will take a threefold approach. First, case studies of 10 to 15 religious congregations from multiple religious traditions in San Antonio will be carried out. In depth interviews will be conducted with religious leaders to assess their level of awareness of mental health issues as well as possible mental health services that are provided formally and informally to parishioners. Second, ethnographic data will be collected based on systematic observation of worship services and other activities that may relate to psychological well-being among congregants (e.g. support groups, Bible studies, social gatherings, etc.) Finally, survey data will be collected from parishioners. Data collected from surveys is meant to assess mental health literacy, overall psychological well-being and level of mental health services received among congregants.
