Note:

SAMS 1.1.1 The aim of this research project is to inform theory and practice on the economic potential of the convergence of cultural sector, digital economy, and entrepreneurial activity. We argue that artists are non-conventional entrepreneurs, identifying themselves with their product or service and neglecting crucial entrepreneurial tasks, such as customer discovery and market strategy. First, this project will create a report assessing the efficacy of 20 incubators and accelerator programs that provide subsidized mentorship in the cultural sector in the United States. The project will include metrics to assess the level of regional/local entrepreneurial culture and the educational, incubation, and economic impact aspects of those programs, including measures related to the digital divide and digital economy access. The analysis of the results will have implications for strategic action for artists who are often thought as ‘non-conventional’ entrepreneurs. In addition, it would identify what are the best practices as well as limitations occurring in the field, with particular focus on digital skills. We will contextualize the arts incubators as it may difficult to generalized findings related to the overall incubation of each art form. However, we expect to discover that entrepreneurial skills and needs are similar across the spectrum of those incubators. We also intend to understand what entrepreneurial skill sets artists are seeking and reconcile those with what arts incubators are currently offering them. If the two do not match, then we will know what is missing from those programs and thus, be able to provide useful feedback to them. Those insights can then be transferred to other incubators including those hosted at universities across the country as well as have major implication for non-arts entrepreneurs. The analysis of the interactions between incubators and the local entrepreneurial culture will provide insights on the similarities and differences of the arts-driven innovation in respect to other sectors and geographical areas. The understanding of such differences is crucial in optimizing the impact of any entrepreneurship education program. Thus, the ultimate goal of this project is informing arts programs across the nation how to best integrate an entrepreneurship element into their curriculum.
