Note:

SAMs 1.1.1; In this research project, the UTSA team will constrain the textural characteristics of the eruptive products of the 2016-2017 eruption of the Bogoslof volcano in the Aleutian Island chain of Alaska in order to 1) discern the amount and possible timing of water-magma interactions during the eruptive period, and 2) understand the formation of the hyper-crystallized inflated trachyte pumices found atop the May 17, 2017 deposits. This project will provide necessary data on the timing and efficacy of magma-water interactions at Bogoslof volcano, and possibly inform the understanding of similarly submarine-subaerial transitional volcanoes and their eruptions. In addition, this eruption provided samples from an understudied portion of the crystalline-vesicular regime of pumices in its inflated trachyte's. Investigations into the formation of these clasts will inform understanding of how and why crystal-rich magma may deform in a ductile, not brittle, manner. In addition to the scientific merits of this study, this research will be provided to the wider scientific community in line with the USGS rules on information dissemination. Samples descriptions and analytical data will be recorded in a well-maintained database of volcanoes and products which is open-access to the public.
