Title of Contract, Award, or Gift: Climate Enhancing Resource Utilization Through Ultra-low-temperature, Electrolytic Carbon Dioxide Valorization on Mars
Name of Granting or Contracting Agency/Entity:
National Aeronautic and Space Administration - NASA
CFDA: 43.008
Program Title: none
Note:
SAMS 1.1.1; In this research project, we will develop an ultra-low temperature (-36°C; average Martian ambient temperature) electrolytic system for the utilization of Martian atmospheric CO2 and surface water/ice resources to produce CH4 and O2 for use as for use as downstream process agnostic feedstock on Mars. We will (i) evaluate the practical viability of the CO2-brine system through preliminary testing of system components (catalysts and separators); (ii) mutually familiarize ourselves with capabilities available at UTSA and Faraday in the context of future joint proposals and (iii) engage diverse UTSA students in NASA relevant STEM research over the course of this project (with the aim of bringing them on as UTSA team members in future joint proposals).
