SAMs 1.3.1; In this research project, the UTSA teams adapt existing literacy and math work with preservice teachers to address the needs of the children in the community. Our work will focus on how the mentors/tutors reframe their instruction to support the students, particularly in terms of creating spaces for the students to engage in activism. As part of the work with Urban Strategies, we will use reading and math assessments to monitor participating students’ growth across the academic year. Research on the family literacy program will focus on ways in which a program can grow out of the needs and experiences of the local community, and how such a program can influence participating families.
