SAMs 1.1.1; The housing crisis for people with disabilities includes affordability and accessibility. Recognizing the need for designing and building affordable and accessible housing, this project is aimed at identifying important design criteria for architectural design of houses that serve people of different ages and abilities. A study was conducted by disABILITYsa in collaboration by the city focused on identifying critical areas of concerns for individuals with disabilities, their family members, and their caregivers during COVID-19 in the City of San Antonio. Data collected from 415 respondents with the majority being middle-and older-age adults presented the residents top concerns to be on (1) personal/family health, (2) social experience, and (3) food security. The findings of these surveys were shared with 15 graduate students taking an architectural design studio taught by Dr. Norouzi. The students were tasked to design Universally Designed residential buildings for individuals with disability. The purpose of this course are final projects created by the students for San Antonians with the lived experience, was presented by the students at the AIA San Antonio Office of Architects and welcomed by San Antonio community members. The co-founder of disABILITYsa is offering a small grant to be used for hiring an undergraduate research assistant. The undergraduate student will work under Dr. Norouzi's supervision and conduct literature review of 150 peer-reviewed scholarly articles published in the last five years. The student will also write a report of the findings resulted from this literature review.
