1.1.1 We propose integrating carbon capture capabilities as additional functions to two low-cost existing soil amendments of other functions, hydrogels, and biochar, to develop novel porous CO2 capture and storage materials for soil-based carbon sequestration. While experimenting with innovative hydrogels and biochars, we will start experiments on five plots (Fig.2) using commercially available hydrogels and biochars in two different ecosystems (pasture and croplands). We will quantify (qualitatively and quantitatively) the roles of microbes on soil carbon sequestration
